Frequently Asked Questions
What counts as the ongoing fee burden?
The recurring fees a franchisee pays on top of running costs — typically a royalty (a percentage of gross sales) plus a marketing levy. Some brands charge a flat weekly or monthly fee instead. This calculator combines them into one comparable figure.
How do I compare a flat-fee franchise to a percentage-based one?
Enter the flat fee and an estimated revenue. The calculator expresses the flat fee as a percentage of that revenue — the same unit percentage-based brands quote — so the two structures become directly comparable.
Where does the category median come from?
It is calculated from disclosed royalty and marketing levy figures across the brands we track in each category — the same data behind our category directory pages. We only show a median once a category has at least 8 brands with disclosed figures; below that we say so rather than show a number from a thin sample.
How is this different from the Franchise P&L Calculator?
This tool answers one question in about 10 seconds: how does a fee structure compare to its category? The P&L Calculator models the full business — revenue, COGS, wages, rent, royalties, and operating profit. Start here for a quick read, then use the P&L calculator when you're modelling a specific opportunity.
Category medians are recalculated from our brand data on every deployment and only shown where at least 8 brands in a category carry disclosed fee figures.
